Through a generous bequest by the late Dr. Joseph W. Walt, Emeritus Professor of History, Simpson College is pleased to offer more than 40 scholarships annually to help cover costs of a Simpson College student's study abroad experience.

Each year, the college will award scholarships for study outside the U.S. on Simpson-sponsored and Simpson-affiliated programs for both short-term (less than 4 weeks in length) and semester or year-long programs.   Some scholarship awards will fund 50% of the program costs (up to $2,500 per scholarship for short-term study and up to $4,000 per scholarship for semester or year-long study).  There will also be $1,000 and $500 scholarships awarded for either short- or long-term programs.

To be eligible to apply for a Dr. Joe Walt International Education Scholarship, students must either

·         have demonstrated financial need,

OR

·         have a Simpson cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above (or a high school GPA of 3.5 or higher if the applicant does not yet have a Simpson GPA.

To apply, students are asked to write an additional essay of up to 500 words in which they address the impact their study abroad experience will have on their academic, professional, and personal goals.  In the essay, applicants should also describe the impact that a Walt Scholarship would have on achieving those goals.  In order to provide study abroad funding assistance to a wider population of students, Cowles Fellows who receive a travel stipend as part of their fellowship to study at Simpson are not eligible to apply for a Walt Scholarship nor are past Walt Scholarship recipients eligible to apply for an additional award.

All Walt Scholarship applications will be reviewed and funding decisions made by a team of college faculty and administrators.  Applicants will be notified of their status within four weeks of the application deadline.

The scholarship application is part of the online study abroad application. If you have questions please contact Director of International Education, Jay Wilkinson (jay.wilkinson@simpson.edu).
