Length of time abroad: 19 days This course will allow students to learn about various concepts of the global community by intensively studying the culture and people of Ghana and South Africa. Students will learn about the sociological principles of race, poverty and social welfare systems within the cultures of two African countries. Students will also learn the impact of the Atlantic slave trade from sub-Sahara Africa to the Americas. Students will also learn the impact of the Apartheid system on South African citizens. Students will engage in service learning projects within rural and/or urban schools. Students will learn and compare the cultures of Ghana and South Africa by engaging in interactive methods including eating, dancing, and a naming ceremony in the traditional method. Students will be involved in extensive reflection activities (both written and verbal), quizzes, journal writing, presentations and research project of current events. Selection decisions announced via email from the OIE for applications received by the priority deadline: Tuesday, October 8, 2019. Applications received after October 1 will be processed on a rolling basis. Those selection decisions will be announced approximately two weeks after the application is submitted.
